How engineering, automation and operational assurance provide lessons for the next generation of awarding organisations
Throughout my career, I have been fortunate enough to work across industries where complexity is not an abstract concept. It is something that has to be understood, managed and respected every single day. From engineering environments and industrial technology through to the energy sector and now increasingly into the world of awarding organisations, assessment and educational technology, one observation has become increasingly clear: industries that appear completely different on the surface often face remarkably similar challenges underneath.
The language changes. The environment changes. The technology changes. However, the fundamental questions remain the same.
How do we know a system can be trusted?
How do we know a decision is reliable?
How do we know that the outcome represents reality?
These questions are at the heart of every complex industry.
When we look at sectors such as energy, aviation, healthcare or advanced manufacturing, we often focus on the visible elements. We see the infrastructure, the equipment, the technology and the final outcome. We see the power station producing electricity, the aircraft completing a journey, the hospital delivering treatment or the engineer completing a critical task.
What we do not always see is the invisible system that sits behind those outcomes.
The processes.
The standards.
The data.
The competence frameworks.
The quality assurance.
The evidence.
The thousands of decisions that collectively create confidence.
This is perhaps one of the most important lessons that the energy sector can offer the future of assessment.
Trust is not created by asking people to believe.
Trust is created by designing systems that can demonstrate why something should be believed.
The Hidden Similarity Between Energy and Assessment
At first glance, energy and assessment appear to belong to completely different worlds.
The energy industry deals with physical assets, industrial systems and operational environments where safety and reliability are fundamental. A failure in these environments can have significant consequences, which is why engineering organisations have spent decades developing highly disciplined approaches to risk management, competency assurance and operational control.
Assessment, on the other hand, deals with people. It exists to recognise learning, measure capability and provide confidence that an individual has achieved a defined standard.
One sector manages machines and infrastructure.
The other manages knowledge and human capability.
Yet the connection becomes clear when we look beyond the surface.
Both industries are responsible for creating trust.
An energy organisation does not simply produce power. It creates confidence that society can depend upon the systems behind that power. Businesses, hospitals and communities rely on the assumption that the infrastructure supporting them has been designed, maintained and operated correctly.
Similarly, an awarding organisation does not simply issue certificates. It creates confidence that a person has demonstrated a recognised level of knowledge, skill and competence. Employers, professional bodies and individuals rely upon the assumption that the assessment system behind that qualification is robust.
The certificate itself is only the visible outcome.
The real value exists in everything that happened before it.
The assessment design.
The evidence collected.
The judgement applied.
The moderation process.
The quality assurance.
The governance.
The professional expertise.
A qualification is trusted because the system behind it is trusted.
This is exactly the same principle that has guided safety-critical industries for decades.
The Engineering of Confidence
One of the most important lessons from engineering is that confidence has to be engineered.
It cannot simply be assumed.
In everyday life, we often trust things because they appear to work. We turn on a light switch without considering the complexity of the energy network behind it. We board an aircraft without personally reviewing thousands of maintenance records and engineering calculations. We use technology platforms without understanding the enormous infrastructure supporting them.
Modern society depends on systems that most people never see.
However, the organisations responsible for those systems understand something very important.
Reliability is not achieved through optimism.
It is achieved through discipline.
Engineering has developed a culture where evidence matters. Decisions must be traceable. Processes must be repeatable. Equipment must be inspected. People must be trained and verified as competent.
This mindset has developed because experience has shown that complex systems rarely fail because of one single problem. They fail because connections between different parts of the system break down.
A piece of equipment may be perfectly designed, but if the maintenance process is weak, the system becomes vulnerable.
A highly skilled person may be performing a task, but if the information available to them is inaccurate, the outcome may still be compromised.
The system as a whole determines the result.
This is a powerful lesson for the future of assessment.
Assessment should not be viewed simply as a transaction between a learner and an awarding organisation. It is part of a much larger ecosystem involving employers, regulators, technology providers, professional bodies and society itself.
The question is not simply whether an assessment has taken place.
The question is whether the entire system creates confidence in the outcome.
Automation: A Lesson From Industry
The conversation around technology and assessment is increasingly focused on automation and artificial intelligence.
This is understandable.
Technology is transforming every sector, and assessment will be no exception.
However, industries such as energy provide an important lesson.
Automation was never introduced simply because it was new or impressive.
It was introduced because organisations needed better ways to manage complexity.
Modern industrial environments generate enormous amounts of information. Sensors monitor equipment performance. Systems analyse operational conditions. Data helps identify potential problems before they become failures.
The purpose of automation is not to remove expertise.
The purpose is to enhance expertise.
The best engineers are not replaced by technology. They are supported by better information. They are given greater visibility, improved analysis and stronger decision-making capability.
The same principle should guide the future use of artificial intelligence in assessment.
The question should not be:
“How can AI replace existing assessment processes?”
The more valuable question is:
“How can AI strengthen trust, improve evidence and support better decisions?”
Imagine assessment systems that can identify patterns in learner performance, support more personalised development, provide deeper quality insights and help organisations understand capability across entire populations.
That is a much more powerful vision than simple automation.
The future is not about removing human judgement.
It is about giving human judgement better intelligence.
The Opportunity for Open Innovation
This is where open innovation becomes increasingly important.
Open innovation is based on a simple principle: the best ideas do not always come from within our own industry.
This can be uncomfortable.
Successful organisations often develop confidence in their own expertise. They create proven processes, established practices and strong professional cultures. These are valuable assets.
However, those same strengths can sometimes become barriers if organisations stop looking outward.
The history of innovation is full of examples where progress came from unexpected connections.
Industries borrowed ideas.
Technologies crossed boundaries.

The opportunity for awarding organisations is significant.
The future of assessment will not simply be about issuing digital certificates or moving existing processes online.
The opportunity is much bigger.
It is about creating trusted digital ecosystems around skills and capability.
It is about connecting evidence, technology, employers and learners.
It is about creating a clearer understanding of what people can do, not simply what qualifications they hold.
The energy sector has already begun that journey in its own environment.
It has learned how to manage complex systems through connected data, operational intelligence and strong assurance models.
The assessment sector now has the opportunity to learn from those principles and apply them in a way that reflects its own unique purpose.
Looking Beyond Our Own Boundaries
Perhaps the greatest lesson from comparing energy and assessment is that innovation does not always come from creating something completely new.
Sometimes it comes from recognising that someone else has already solved part of the problem.
The challenge is finding the connection.
The future belongs to organisations that are willing to look beyond their own boundaries.
To ask different questions.
To learn from different industries.
To combine different perspectives.
Because the challenges facing modern organisations are rarely contained within one discipline.
Technology affects education.
Data affects decision-making.
Artificial intelligence affects every profession.
Skills development affects every economy.
The organisations that succeed will be those that understand that innovation is not owned by one sector.
It is created where ideas meet.
The energy sector has spent generations learning how to build trust in complex environments.
The future of assessment has a similar opportunity.
Not to become like engineering.
Not to replace human judgement with technology.
But to learn from industries that have already discovered how to create confidence at scale.
The question we should ask is not:
“What does the future of assessment look like?”
The more important question is:
“What can we learn from those who have already built the future we are trying to create?”
That is the foundation of open innovation.
